Why dog measuring matters

Knowing the precise measurements of your dog makes purchasing accessories and clothing for your pup so much easier. It doesn’t matter if it’s a collar or some pup clothing you’re looking for. The right measurements will ensure that they are going to fit him securely and comfortably. While there are sizing guides and size charts that you can refer to depending on the dog's breed, you’ll have a more precise fit if you take your dog’s measurements yourself. Here are some of the reasons that dog measuring matters:

  1. Calculating the right cage or carrier size.

Important measurements such as the length of a pup’s body matter especially when choosing the right sized crate or carrier for your pet. The last thing you want is to put him in a carrier that is too small and cramped for him. This can significantly impact his experience, especially if you decide to take him traveling with you. If you plan on putting your dog’s bed inside the carrier, then all the more reason that you need to get one that fits, and the right measurements will ensure that.
  2. Ensure a comfortable and secure fit for collars.

A dog collar is one accessory that your dog will probably wear for long periods. So, it makes sense that it is the perfect size for your pup to ensure that those walks and hikes will be as comfortable as they are fun.
  3. Shop for the right-sized clothing

. Dog clothing comes in a plethora of sizes. Whether you’re buying a dog coat, sweater, or vest, the right measurements will ensure that the clothing comfortably fits and does not restrict his movements.
  4. Getting the right fit when shopping for a harness

A dog harness needs to be a snug fit without causing chaffing on your pup’s body. The right measurements will also help you narrow down which type of harness will be most suitable for your furry friend. Harnesses come in a variety of styles and sizes and knowing your dog’s statistics ahead of time means you’re already halfway to getting him the right accessory.

Dog measuring tips

Taking our dog’s measurements is a pretty straightforward process. You won’t need fancy equipment to get it done as well and can easily do it at home. Here are some tips to help you do it right:

  1. Make sure you have the right tools. You’ll need a fabric measuring tape for this purpose as it ensures the most accuracy. A tape or string measure works too. Have a notepad and a pen nearby to scribble the numbers on as well.

  2. Have your dog stand when taking his measurements. Most of the measurements you need to take require that your dog is standing. It helps too to have somebody else hold your pup as you take his measurements. This will not only keep him still but will also keep him occupied while you’re taking note of his measurements.

  3. Take measurements against the wall. Having your dog stand against the wall is a good idea while measuring is a good idea as this will help him stay still.

Important dog measuring advice

Measuring your dog is easy enough to do. How you measure larger breeds like German shepherds, Great Danes, Labrador retrievers, or greyhounds is pretty much the same as you would smaller ones like dachshunds, pugs, or French bulldogs.

  1. Neck girth: This pertains to the circumference of a dog’s neck. Start by holding the tape measure at the nape. Wrap the tape around the neck, making sure to pass right over the chest until it meets at the nape. Read the measurements and make sure to jot it down.

  2. Height: To measure the height, position the tape measure at the base of your pup’s front paw. Pull the tape up to the top of your pup’s head and take note of the numbers. These numbers can be measured while your pup is standing or sitting.

  3. Chest girth: This refers to the measurement of the chest area which includes the top shoulder and then down around his armpits. This could also be the space behind the front legs. When measuring, make sure that the dog is standing. Identify the widest part between his shoulder blades. Then, wrap the measuring tape around your pup, allowing the tape to pass behind the forelegs. Don’t let go of the tape and record the numbers you see.

  4. Body length: this involves the measurement from the top of the neck to the base of the tail. When taking measurements, position the tape measure on the base of the tail, right at the meeting point of the body and the tail. Pull on the tape until it reaches the base of the neck, right where the dog’s back and neck connect. Record the numbers afterward.
